Roche has launched a new research group it’s naming the Institute of Human Biology

Located in Roche’s headquarters of Basel, Switzerland, the institute aims to grow to 250 scientists and bioengineers over the next four years, while building out a network of academic collaborators around the world. It currently houses 80 people, a Roche spokesperson said.

The unit will be the “central pillar” of pRED’s 10 year strategy, the spokersperson said, and the company will make a sustained financial commitment “in the tens of millions.”

Human model systems such as 3D “organoids” derived from stem cells, Roche said, mirror human and disease biology more accurately than animal models and could help researchers identify drug targets that may not be spotted with conventional discovery approaches.
